Anime are Japanese animation. The word "Anime" is abbreviated punctuation of "Animation".
Anime first arose in 20th century. In 1930's anime became alternative format of storytelling in Japan. In 1970s manga became really popular and many of them were later animated. After a successful adaptation of anime overseas in 1980s, anime gained increased acceptance in overseas markets in 1990s and even more in 21st century.
Anime industry has more than 430 production studios. Despite of fraction of film market(domestic), anime achives a majority of DVD sales, and it has been successful in international market after the rise of English-Dubs.
